The theme of Cassandra, the prophetess who spoke t The theme of Cassandra, the prophetess who spoke the truth but was cursed to never be believed was central to the Soothsayers Chorus last week. It is central to the latest movie the Social Reckoning (a must watch.)
It is also central to Ana Mendieta‘s show at Tate Modern which I finally got to see yesterday.
So much Mendieta‘s work centres on violence against women and how it is either dismissed or downright ignored.
Having been deeply troubled by the lack of reaction to the violent sex assault and murder of her fellow student at the university of Iowa, she made the work Moffitt building Piece in 1973 where she spilled animal blood on the street to make it seem like a crime scene. She then photographed the reaction of passers by. The reaction was a complete lack of reaction. A refusal to engage. Apart from one chap who cleared it up.
It’s also in her own life story, having ostensibly been killed by her husband Carl Andre, who pushed her out of the 38th floor of their apartment building, and was then acquitted of any wrongdoing.
The issue of who is speaking the truth and who is to be believed is as rife as ever. Whether in politics, current affairs or the tragic recent story of the Cornell Seven. Who will be believed?
The other side of Mendieta’s work is transcendental, about nature, about reaffirming herself in the world, about regeneration and universal energy that runs through everything.
Her Silueta series (1973–1980) is a haunting and beautiful body of work: her own silhouette burned into earth, carved in sand, traced in fire, dissolved, or blooming with flowers and blood. Presence and absence.
A  fascinating and searing show.

Today, Alex Margo Arden @olddrag walked us through Today, Alex Margo Arden @olddrag walked us through her show “Nothing Personal” at the @nicoletta_fiorucci_london, curated by @vittoria.totale, with thanks to @chisenhalegallery . Privileged to be the 1st to be there before the show even opened. Alex was the very first winner of the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation Prize @friezeofficial last year.
In the show, it’s all the opposite of the title of the show, she restages the intensely personal belongings of Amy Winehouse across every room of the Foundation, her library of books, her make up, perfume and some objects that were sent to sent to her but never received. Each object was tracked down from auction catalogues, paparazzi shots etc: I was touched by her books,
especially
combinedwith the deliberate absence of any pictures of her or sound of her music. A powerful and very different story about all the objects left after a life lived. And what we make of them for those of us left Behind, especially when celebrity is tied into it.

Thanks to @lea_herbeth @nationalgallery Bonhams (@ Thanks to @lea_herbeth @nationalgallery Bonhams (@adrianabuckley ) for our pre opening tour this morning of the Renoir and Love exhibition that’s just opened.  Pre opening ticket sales have already outpaced sales for the Van Gogh exhibition, that tells you something.
Lea gave us such an indepth insight into Renoir’s world, his internal wrangling between adhering to the impressionist movement and his own unique painterly voice that triumphs in the end.
Renoir can seem kitch to our current aethetic, but suspend that modern lens for a minute, and you are in a different world. This was a time, as Haussman rebuilt Paris, when women were allowed to walk the streets unaccompanied for the first time, that various codes of behaviour were subtly changing (did you know that a woman not wearing a hat was seen as provocative & flirty ? Cue fourth pic where the chap behind a hatless beauty looks as if he has read that message loud and clear).
Love the scenes of intimacy he depicts, the love of his friends, of his wife and children, of joyful dancing in les danses galantes in the parks. It’s love in the widest sense of the word. (In my little way, my breel.uk open air reels in the park I now organise in Barnes once a month  (40 people at the last one!) is my attempt to recreate exactly the joy depicted by Renoir here (last  2 pics!). Do we still seek the same 150 years later?
Do go and see the show, suspend the modern lens, and let yourself travel in time.

Just as Frieze frenzy kicks off, things are firing Just as Frieze frenzy kicks off, things are firing up all the way over in San Francisco too. K-pop star RM of BTS (or Joon) has just opened up his art collection @sfmoma.
Beautifully understated yet powerful, his show "Between You and Me" pairs 139 works from his mostly Korean collection with 39 from the museum's own holdings. Love his Yun Hyong-keuns (16 works in all) meeting Rothko, Kim Whanki's "Whanki Blue" beside a Yves Klein sponge, his To Sang-bong's Forsythia hanging with a Morandi still life.
@mgerlis writes about this show beautifully in the FT. Love the timeliness of it, as London rides the same wave, with the British Museum's new Korea exhibition and both Hyun Sook Soon and Mire Lee at Frieze (Sprüth Magers, D32).
Wish could be in two places at once.
On until 7 February 📍 San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

So much happening in preparation for Frieze week b So much happening in preparation for Frieze week but one thing to tell you about first up is @bethgreenacre_london and @bettinaprentice ‘s show “the Soothsayers Chorus”, which has just opened at Pink Floyd’s old studios (where they recorded Another Brick in the Wall ) The show focuses on
a very important and urgent topic, the collective power of women’s voices and wisdom. This is especially crucial in this moment of increasing toxic masculinity.
Have you seen this post - which Elon Musk agreed to- that females and low testosterone males are incapable of identifying the truth as they’re more preoccupied with what other people think, and that only high testosterone alpha males can decipher the truth and should therefore be rulers of the world??

This show is all the more urgent to counter that precise narrative.
Bringing together 16 international women artists, the exhibition reclaims the myth of Cassandra through ideas of intuition, ancestral memory and speculative futures, transforming her once-isolated voice into a collective chorus.
An incredible roster of artists including Judy Chicago, Clementine Keith-Roach, Lucia Pizzani, Manal Aldowayan, Anna Mendieta and many others.
Can’t wait to bring my group to see your show on 15th October 🌟

What I love about humans: creating something out o What I love about humans: creating something out of nothing. ✨

The V&A has never had a Global Africa Acquisition Committee, that is, until this year.

Did you know that Global African objects make up just 0.4% of the V&A’s collection?

Well, the V&A is doing something about it. This new, incredible group, led by Madeleine Haddon @madhaddon and Gus Casely-Hayford, helps ensure the collection is diversified into Africa and its Diaspora, with key modern and contemporary works. A new space to discuss the relationship between Global Africa and Britain 🌟

The donations from members of the committee go entirely to acquiring works from global Africa. Let me know if you’d like more details.

This all heralds a fab evening at V&A East tomorrow night: with an introduction to the Acquisition Group and a private view of the Museum’s inaugural exhibition, The Music Is Black: A British Story.

Looking forward to seeing you all there @fredaisingoma @a_christianindior @izeidemudia 💚💚

Last night at Antony Gormley’s studio with my @chi Last night at Antony Gormley’s studio with my @chisenhalegallery family and so many supporters. Antony — one of the founding fathers of Chisenhale in case you didn’t know — spoke powerfully about how pivotal CG had been for him as a young artist, with his studio above the gallery, and how important Chisenhale remains today in launching the careers of young artists. He thanked every single supporter from the heart, and generously opened up his studio to us all.  No photos allowed as you can imagine but oh boy was it an Aladdin’s cave of glorious Gormley bodies in all their disparate forms, whether made of sticks and rods, blocks or boards, either hanging from the ceiling 20 meters high ready for collection, or on the warehouse floor in the middle of construction. Then, a room of maquettes, including for the unmistakable Royal Academy Summer Exhibition cardboard work, and many more. All of which to confirm that the zeitgeist is with Chisenhale  — not least with the incredible roster of artists coming up this year and in 2027, including you, @deborahjoyceholman! Loved seeing you @rachelverghis @mingk888 and @flavianespatti ❤️#ChisenhaleGallery #AntonyGormley #ContemporaryArt #LondonArt #ArtistStudio

Music expresses that which cannot be said. Just po Music expresses that which cannot be said.
Just popped in to see the Johnny Marr guitar exhibition @Christies this morning, ahead of the auction on the 17th Sept.
So moved to see the guitars that have been the soundtrack of our lives❤️
Around 90 guitars and amplifiers, tracing Johnny’s career from co-founding The Smiths through The Pretenders, The The, Electronic, The Healers, Modest Mouse and The Cribs, alongside collaborations with Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Bryan Ferry, Beck, Hans Zimmer, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Noel Gallagher, Billie Eilish, Blondie, Gorillaz and Franz Ferdinand.Go, even if just to hear Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr recounting how it was the guitars’ own individuality — their unique voice — that gave birth to songs on so many occasions, whether Slide Away, Wonderwall, No Time To Die, or countless others across four decades.
Electrifying
